Detroit Lions wide receiver Anquan Boldin is leading a five-person team of NFL players that will meet with members of Congress to discuss race relations and police brutality, ESPN reports.
Joining Boldin are Lions safety Glover Quin, Cleveland Browns quarterback Josh McCown and wide receiver Andrew Hawkins and Philadelphia Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins. All five are set to have a meeting with members of the United States House of Representatives and could meet with Speaker of the House Paul Ryan.
“Boldin told ESPN’s Jim Trotter that he asked those players because they are ‘all guys who are well-respected in the league and who have the same goal as myself.'”
He also said to the group wants to “help close [the] gap” that’s led to “huge mistrust” between law enforcement and African-American communities.
McCown is the only white member of the five-player coalition. His goal, he says, is to listen.
“I don’t believe we, as white people, can understand what African-Americans go through on a daily basis, because it’s different,” McCown said. “For me, first and foremost, I want to be able to acknowledge that, and say that our stories are different and our histories are different, but let’s just try to be a part of making it better moving forward.”
