2023 Wyndham Championship: TV schedule, predictions, tee times and more

The 2022-23 regular season finale on the PGA Tour commences this week for the Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Sedgefield Country Club is a par-70 course, measuring 7,131 yards. It is one of the easiest courses on the PGA Tour, averaging 1.24 strokes under par since 2018. However, the fairways are the ninth narrowest.

This week could be a shootout with three par-5s that can be reachable for the field. Of the 12 par-4s at Sedgefield, nine are under 440 yards.

All the pressure will be on the players not only to compete this week, but to also finish the regular season on a high note.

Since last September, there have been 44 events and it all comes down to this before the FedEx Cup playoffs begin next week at the FedEx St. Jude Championship.

This is the last chance for players to improve on their FedEx Cup ranking ahead of the playoffs as the top 70 in the standings make next week’s FedEx St. Jude Championship field.

As a result of shortening the playoffs to the top 70 instead of the top 125 in previous years, some the PGA Tour’s popular names are teeing it up this week, including a couple of major winners in Shane Lowry and Justin Thomas, ranked No. 76 and No. 79, respectively.

It will be a thrilling week as the standings continue to fluctuate throughout the tournament for those hovering around the top 70 to get into the playoffs and the top 125 to maintain PGA Tour status for next season, if not already exempt.

Last year, Tom Kim won by five strokes as a Special Temporary Member on the PGA Tour. Kim will not be defending his title this week after withdrawing due to a tear in his ankle that he suffered during the Open Championship a couple weeks ago and had to grind out a major tournament runner-up finish.

Who are some of the top golfers in the Wyndham Championship field?

wyndham championship, hideki matsuyama

In addition to Thomas and Lowry as a couple of past major champions in the field outside the top 70 in the FedEx Cup Standings, another past major champion is in the field in 2021 Masters Champion, Hideki Matsuyama, who sits at No. 56 entering this week.

One of the highest ranked players in the FedEx Cup standings competing this week is Sam Burns, ranked No. 19, and one spot behind Si Woo Kim, who is also competing this week.

Both Burns and Kim have a PGA Tour victory this season. Si Woo Kim won the Sony Open in Hawaii in January and Burns won the World Wide Dell Technologies-Match Play event in March.

In addition, both Ryder Cup captains, Luke Donald and Zach Johnson, are in the field as there are a few events left in U.S. Ryder Cup automatic qualifying, which concludes at the BMW Championship in a few weeks.

5 players who the best chance to win the Wyndham Championship

pga: wyndham championship, j.t. poston

J.T. Poston

J.T. Poston has become one of the hotter players in golf right now with three top 10s in his last four starts. Poston recorded back-to-back T6s at the John Deere Classic and the Genesis Scottish Open before a T41 finish at the Open Championship. He then responded with a T2 finish last week at the 3M Open with all four rounds in the 60s.

Poston had an opportunity for the win but was a bit aggressive and settled for triple bogey on the 72nd hole to tie for second last week. Poston currently sits at 49th in the FedEx Cup standings looking to maintain his top 50 ranking to play the BMW Championship, the second leg of the FedEx Cup playoffs.

Justin Thomas

From one J.T. to another, Justin Thomas is also among this top five. Thomas, who sits at No. 79 in the standings, enters this week looking to play well and find himself in next week’s FedEx St. Jude Championship field.

In Thomas’ last eight starts, he only has one top-10 finish, which came at the Travelers Championship, another scorable tournament like this week. Despite not playing the Wyndham Championship since 2016, Thomas has to take advantage of the scoring opportunities on the course this week.

Hideki Matsuyama

Hideki Matsuyama comes into this week’s Wyndham Championship after a first-round 64 last week at the 3M Open but struggled, en route to a T30 finish. Luckily for him, he is 56th in the FedEx Cup standings, looking to get inside the top 50 this week, instead of trying to do that next week.

Matsuyama has two T13s in last four starts – the Travelers Championship and the Open Championship looking to rekindle that energy heading into the playoffs.

Denny McCarthy

PGA: Wyndham Championship - Second Round

Before the Open Championship, Denny McCarthy was playing well, recording four top 10 finishes in his last eight starts, dating back to the Wells Fargo Championship in early May. That also includes a playoff loss at the Memorial Tournament about two months. Before missing the cut at the Open Championship, McCarthy recorded back-to-back top 10s at the Travelers Championship and the John Deere Classic.

The key for McCarthy being inside the top 30 in the FedEx Cup standings is that he ranks third on the PGA Tour this season in strokes gained: putting, which will be key to make putts and avoid extra strokes on the scorecard.

Kevin Streelman

Kevin Streelman returns to the state of his alma mater, Duke University, which is about 60 miles from Sedgefield County Club. Streelman, who currently sits at No. 84 in the standings is looking for a positive week to compete in the FedEx Cup playoffs next week. Last week, he tied with Poston at the T2 position while looking to build off that performance from last week.

Streelman finished tied for seventh at the Wyndham Championship two years ago, which was his best finish at this tournament since his opening start in 2008.
