The New England Patriots are searching for a quarterback after their former leader Tom Brady won his seventh Super Bowl title Sunday night with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. While the offseason begins, Patriots rumors suggest that Carson Wentz will most likely not be that quarterback.
According to The Athletic’s Jeff Howe, the Patriots are not serious suitors for Wentz as trade talks start to heat up. Wentz threw for 2,620 yards and 16 touchdowns last season before being benched, mostly due to his 15 interceptions.
There are other suitors for Wentz, but the Patriots will most likely not be one of them, which could make sense due to other positions they need to fill during the offseason.

Patriots rumors: Carson Wentz’s trade value is too high for New England
Reports over the weekend said the Philadelphia Eagles have requested a “Matthew Stafford type package,” which included two future first-round picks, a third-round pick, and former number one pick Jared Goff. Some teams have turned away because of this, but there are enough teams to understand that a trade will be coming soon.

However, rumors suggest that the compensation Philadelphia is requesting for their 28-year-old quarterback is through the roof. Stafford, who many deem to be better than Wentz, was traded to the Los Angeles Rams last week, which started the offseason’s rapid quarterback carousel.
The MMQB’s Albert Breer reported that the Patriots only offered the Lions a second-round pick and an unknown player for Stafford. Whether the reports of Stafford not wanting to go to New England affected the trade offer is unknown at this point in time, but with other options available, New England shouldn’t put all of their eggs in one basket.
Patriots rumors: Marcus Mariota could be one of New England’s trade targets
It’s reasonable to think New England isn’t interested in giving up an abundance of assets for Wentz. He was one of the worst quarterbacks in the NFL last season and hasn’t looked like a Pro Bowl-caliber player since he tore his ACL in 2017. The Patriots will most likely pass on Wentz’s unpredictability, along with his resistance to disciplined coaching, and move on to a safer bet at quarterback.
Patriots rumors: Jameis Winston could be a target if he leaves New Orleans
Jameis Winston will be a free agent this offseason after joining the New Orleans Saints because of his former team signing Brady last year. Many expect Drew Brees to retire in the near future, leading to Winston fighting for the starting quarterback position against Taysom Hill in New Orleans.
However, ESPN.com’s Mike Reiss laid out the possibility of the Patriots possibly getting into the sweepstakes for Winston. The biggest reason that could lead Winston to New England could revolve around whether the organization is willing to create a bidding war against the Saints for the quarterback.
The Saints really want Winston back and it has been reported that he could be ithe favorite for the starting job. But, if there is a better offer available and a greater opportunity to start, his market could heat up and out price a team that has the least amount of cap space in the NFL.

Reiss mentioned how the Patriots are better positioned to make a run at him than the Saints. Plus, the Saints didn’t start Winston the whole season and decided to move forward with Hill when Brees was out.
Whether New England comes out with Winston remains to be seen, but it would be a very smart idea to target the former number two overall quarterback for both the short term and long term future.
