Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and the rest of his team were celebrating their latest Super Bowl title Wednesday afternoon with Chiefs Kingdom fans in downtown.
It was a festive environment until a shooting took place outside of Union Station at the parade. Mahomes and the majority of his fellow Chiefs had already left the scene when it took place.
As of publication of this article, at least one person has died with a total of 22 being injured. Obviously, this tragic situation rocked Mahomes and the rest of his Chiefs. Shortly after news broke of the shooting, the reigning Super Bowl MVP took to social media to send his prayers to the Kansas City community.
Patrick Mahomes wasn’t the only member of the Chiefs to take to social media as a way to send their thoughts to the Kansas City community.
Later in the day, star tight end Travis Kelce also sent a rare social media post in response to Wednesday’s horrific events.
“I am heartbroken over the tragedy that took place today. My heart is with all who came out to celebrate with us and have been affected. KC, you mean the world to me,” Kelce wrote on X.
Offensive tackle Donovan Smith sounded a similar tune.
Linebacker Drue Tranquill did, too.
Chiefs defensive end Charles Omenihu also chimed in with a plea on social media.
As for the two-time defending Super Bowl champions, they also released a statement.
“We are truly saddened by the senseless act of violence that occurred outside of Union State at the conclusion of today’s parade and rally,” the Chiefs said in a statement. “Our hearts go out to the victims, their families and all of Kansas City.”
Patrick Mahomes and his Chiefs are just days removed from defeating the San Francisco 49er in overtime of Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas.
Wednesday was expected to be a day of celebration in Kansas City. That’s been replaced with the sobering reality of another mass shooting in the United States.
