Former New York Mets star predicted to win Cy Young in 2025: Could they be trade deadline target this summer?

A notable MLB insider recently predicted that a New York Mets legend will win the American League Cy Young Award in 2025. It would be a bounce-back season that could put him on their trade radar in the summer.

Opening Day for the 2025 MLB season is finally here. One of the teams that will be taking to the field this afternoon is the Mets. There is a lot of excitement about this team after they made a surprise run to the National League Championship Series last year. Much of their 2024 team is back this season, and they added superstar outfielder Juan Soto.

However, just like last year, their starting pitching staff is their most notable weakness. And injuries to a couple of their key starters this spring have not helped matters. They lack depth and a clear-cut ace. The club has been linked to various trade rumors for weeks, but one interesting trade option that could emerge later this year is Mets great Jacob deGrom.

Last week, SNY MLB insider John Harper made a bold prediction about what deGrom will do in his third season with his current team, the Texas Rangers.

Could the New York Mets target Jacob deGrom trade if he has a big season in 2025?

“DeGrom was once again making it look easy in his brief return at the end of last season, as overpowering as ever in three abbreviated starts. It’s just a matter of staying healthy, and you’d think his latest elbow surgery would provide him some rope in that area,” Harper wrote.

“It doesn’t take 200 innings to win a Cy Young anymore either, and if Justin Verlander can win the Cy Young at age 39 after missing two years from TJ surgery, well, why not deGrom?”

The former New York Mets star has only made nine appearances for Texas after signing an $185 million contract in 2022. However, he is over a year removed from a second Tommy John surgery. He looked good late last year and during spring training. Texas is hoping he is a key piece in getting them back to World Series contention.

But if they have another down season, they could certainly be looking to move the close to $80 million left on his deal after this season. If he has an All-Star-level season in 2025, the Mets could consider adding him if they still feel they are one good pitcher away from being a serious title contender.

Furthermore, the idea of the two-time Cy Young award winner returning to the team where he became a star would intrigue a lot of Mets fans. The Rangers would likely need to pick up some of the money left in his deal or take back a contract New York would like to move.
