Pete Alonso makes key decision relating to future with New York Mets

The New York Mets are coming off another disappointing season that has ended without a trip to the postseason. Now entering the offseason, one of the biggest questions surrounding the Mets involves the future of star slugger Pete Alonso, who’s headed into the final year of his contract.

Talks of a potential trade have lingered, but the Mets may not be ready to part with one of baseball’s best power threats. Yet, that doesn’t mean plenty of teams aren’t interested in the three-time All-Star.

Another option is signing Alonso to a long-term contract extension, removing the awkward cloud lingering over his future. Yet, if the Mets do plan on negotiating a new deal for their first baseman, they’ll now have to discuss a contract with his new agent, Scott Boras.

Boras is known for representing many of the biggest names in MLB, including Bryce Harper, Juan Soto, and Max Scherzer, all of whom have some of the largest contracts in the league.

Typically, players represented by the BorasCorp don’t find common ground with their organization before reaching free agency, and that could be the same path the Mets are headed down with Alonso.

However, with the Mets already holding tentative discussions with Alonso dating back to last season, it’s certainly possible the two sides can agree on contract value at some point over the offseason. For now, Mets president David Stearns says he anticipates Alonso being on the Opening Day roster for next season, but as we all know, that could change in a flash. If Alonso isn’t able to secure a new contract, he’d be one of the top free agents in the 2025 class.
