While many around the league expect the New York Mets to be sellers at the MLB trade deadline, it looks like one specific star will be off-limits in any trade conversation.
The New York Mets 2023 campaign has been a disaster. Despite having the most expensive roster in league history, the team’s performance has been far from what the front office expected. Especially after many of the key players from last year’s 101-win squad are back this season.

The back end of the rotation and the bullpen has been rough, and All-Stars like Jeff McNeil and Starling Marte have had down years. That is why despite their grand aspirations, many around MLB expect the organization to see the writing on the wall and decide to be sellers ahead of the Aug. 1 trade deadline.
New York Mets plan to make Pete Alonso off-limits at MLB trade deadline
Tommy Pham, Mark Canha, David Robertson, and Omar Narvaez all have a good chance of being on different teams when August begins. Furthermore, while it isn’t likely, there is an outside possibility that the New York Mets look to move Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer’s massive contracts. However, on Monday it was revealed that there is one player the team has zero intention of having talks about.
SNY MLB insider Andy Martino reported this week that “while the biggest haul would come from moving Pete Alonso, the Mets do not plan to engage other clubs about the superstar first baseman. Alonso is scheduled to become a free agent after the 2024 season, and as one league source put it, ‘If they don’t feel like they are going to sign him, the offseason is a better time to talk about trades, because more teams would be involved.'”
It is interesting that Alonso was not viewed as untouchable long-term, but just not on the trade market right now, and the winter will be a different story. Martino also revealed that sources expect the Mets sell off to get hot and heavy next week as the trade deadline gets closer.
