Golden State Warriors break NBA record for most points in a quarter

As if there was any question about whether the Golden State Warriors were in postseason form, their first-quarter effort on Sunday erased all doubts. Facing off against the Portland Trail Blazers on the road at the Moda Center, the Warriors managed to break the NBA record for the most points scored by any team in an individual quarter with 55.

That’s an enormous number for a 12-minute span in any basketball game. Some teams don’t even get to 55 points in an entire half of play. Prior to the Stephen Curry era, scoring 55 in a half was considered to be a good day.

But welcome to the Splash Brothers era, where the Warriors redefined what an impressive scoring display really looked like. Yet on Sunday, it wasn’t even Chef Curry cooking up the sauce. Instead, it was Klay Thompson and Jordan Poole who led the way.

Thompson had 17 first-quarter points, and Poole chipped in 12 of his own. Yet, Curry did add eight more. Still, this was a team effort that led to the record-setting afternoon.

Oh yeah, and the Warriors’ 12 three-point makes also tied the NBA record for the most in a single quarter. In other words, they were on fire in the first frame against the Blazers. By halftime, the Warriors were already up to 84 points, thanks to a record-breaking first quarter.

Perhaps Klay Thompson was right when he said the Warriors couldn’t be beaten in a seven-game playoff series. We’ll find out soon enough.
