Starting safety Lannden Zanders will miss the rest of Clemson’s season due to a shoulder injury, coach Dabo Swinney announced Monday on his radio show.
Zanders, a junior, left the Tigers’ 10-3 loss to Georgia on Saturday after getting hurt in the first quarter. He finished the game with two tackles, having played just five snaps. He will now undergo shoulder surgery that will keep him out the rest of the way.
“That’s going to be a long-term injury,” Swinney said. “I hate that for him. But in the long run, it may be the best thing for him. He can use this as a redshirt year and come back better than ever.”
Clemson has run into early-season trouble keeping players healthy at the safety position. The Tigers were also without Nolan Turner, another starting safety and All-ACC performer, against Georgia.
Zanders earned increased playing time in 2020, notching 34 tackles and three pass breakups. For his career, he has 57 tackles, three sacks and four pass breakups.
