Caleb Williams was an absolute star quarterback for the Oklahoma Sooners during what was an otherwise trying year for the football powerhouse.
A five-star recruit out of Washington D.C. in the class of 2021, Williams committed to play in Norman back in July of 2020. That was despite the presence of another big-time recruit in Spencer Rattler.
It now looks like both could be on the outs. Fresh off Ratler transferring to South Carolina, Williams just announced that he has put his name in the transfer portal.
As noted in his statement, Caleb Williams will not rule out a return to Oklahoma under new head coach Brent Venables. However, he made it clear that former head coach Lincoln Riley’s decision to move on to USC has played a role in this decision.
- Caleb Williams stats: 65% completion, 1,916 yards, 21 touchdowns, four interceptions, 442 rushing yards, six touchdowns
Williams ultimately took over for an ineffective Rattler for an Oklahoma team that finished with an 11-2 record. He threw for 242 yards and three touchdowns in a win over Oregon in the Alamo Bowl with Bob Stoops acting as the Sooners’ interim head coach.
Where might Caleb Williams land?
Obviously, joining Riley in Southern California remains an option for the east coast native. Before signing with Oklahoma back in 2020, Williams also took visits with Clemson, Penn State, LSU, Oregon, Georgia and Alabama.
If Williams does indeed end up deciding to transfer, there’s not going to be a shortage of big-name college football programs interested in the 6-foot-1 signal caller. That’s for sure.
