The long and disastrous Tennessee Volunteers head coaching search could soon come to a culmination. After multiple viable candidates turned down the struggling program, it looks like current Washington State head coach Mike Leach will become the Vols’ next head coach.
Sources tell @NBCDFWSports that former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach is working on a deal to become the next coach at Tennessee. A deal could be announced Friday. I’m working on more details.

While we have made fun of Tennessee’s head coaching search, Leach would actually be a tremendous hire. It remains to be seen how his spread offense might work in the SEC, but at least it will be more watchable than what we saw under the recently fired Butch Jones.
Leach has served as Washington State’s head coach since 2012. He led the team to a 9-3 regular season record and into contention in the Pac 12. Prior to that, Leach served as the Texas Tech head coach from 2000-09, leading the program to a bowl appearance each season.
If Leach is indeed hired, he will be responsible for turning around a program in Knoxville that just finished up a 4-8 season.
