New York Rangers captain Jacob Trouba was fined $5,000 by the NHL Department of Player Safety on Sunday for high-sticking Boston Bruins forward Trent Frederic.

The fine is the maximum allowed under the league’s collective bargaining agreement.

The incident occurred early in the second period of New York’s 7-4 victory over the Boston Bruins on Saturday afternoon after Trouba and Frederic were exchanging shoves in front of the Rangers’ net. After the whistle, the defenseman swung his stick and caught Frederic in the side of the head.

Trouba, who was not penalized on the play, has eight points (one goal, seven assists) and a plus-9 rating in 19 games this season.

Trouba, 29, has totaled 295 points (71 goals, 224 assists) in 698 career games with the Winnipeg Jets and Rangers.

The Jets selected Trouba with the ninth overall pick of the 2012 NHL Draft. They traded him to the Rangers on June 17, 2019 for defenseman Neal Pionk and a first-round pick in the that year’s draft.
