OpTic, Thieves, Subliners, FaZe open CDL Major IV with victories

OpTic Texas, the Los Angeles Thieves, the New York Subliners and the Atlanta FaZe won their opening-round matches Thursday on the first day of the Call of Duty League’s Major IV.

Texas and New York will meet in Round 2 of the winners’ bracket Saturday, and Los Angeles and Atlanta will square off on the other side of the bracket.

The four losing teams — the Boston Breach, Minnesota Rokkr, Seattle Surge and Vegas Legion — dropped into the elimination bracket.

Top-seeded Texas defeated Boston 3-1. OpTic won 250-164 on Mercado Las Almas Hardpoint before the Breach recovered with a 6-3 win on Embassy Search and Destroy. OpTic moved ahead for good, taking Breenbergh Hotel Control 3-2 and Breenbergh Hotel Hardpoint 250-191.

Brandon “Dashy” Otell of Canada carried Texas with 96 kills on a plus-1.5 K/D ratio.

The No. 2 seed Thieves beat the Rokkr 3-1. They won the first two maps handily, taking Al Bagra Fortress Hardpoint 250-187 and El Asilo Search and Destroy 6-2. Minnesota earned a 3-2 result on Himmelmatt Expo Control, but Los Angeles clinched the match with a 250-182 win on Breenbergh Hotel Hardpoint.

All four Thieves players finished with positive K/D ratios. Kenneth “Kenny” Williams led all players with 90 kills.

Sixth-seeded Atlanta upended third-seeded Seattle 3-1. The Surge struck the first blow with a 250-229 win on Breenbergh Hotel Hardpoint before Atlanta won 6-2 on Breenbergh Hotel Search and Destroy, 3-0 on El Asilo Control and 250-142 on Zarqwa Hydroelectric Hardpoint.

Chris “Simp” Lehr starred for Atlanta with 85 kills and a plus-1.39 K/D ratio.

In the only sweep of the day, fourth-seeded New York took down Vegas 3-0. The Subliners won 250-200 on Mercado Las Almas Hardpoint, then shut out the Legion 6-0 on El Asilo Search and Destroy and 3-0 on El Asilo Control.

Cesar “Skyz” Bueno had 52 kills and a plus-1.68 to lead New York.
