Former Ohio State star blasts current state of bowl games after Florida State’s embarrassing loss to Georgia

One former Ohio State star believes Florida State’s embarrassing loss in the 2023 Orange Bowl is a perfect example of why Bowl games now “suck.”

Florida State entered Saturday’s highly anticipated Orange Bowl clash against the Georgia Bulldogs with bittersweet feelings. Despite going unbeaten in their 13 regular season games and winning the ACC Conference Championship, the college football playoff committee deemed them unworthy of a spot in this year’s tournament.

Georgia was also left out of the four-team tournament despite suffering just one loss in 2023 and having won college football’s last two national championships. However, the Bulldogs roster handled the letdown in a very different way than the Seminoles. Due to plans to enter the 2024 NFL Draft and the transfer portal, FSU was without 23 of their players on Saturday.

Unsurprisingly, with Georgia having most of their roster from this season, they obliterated the short-handed Florida State squad by a score of 63-3 in the Orange Bowl. It was a pathetic display in a game that many viewed as the best matchup of this year’s bowl season outside of the college football playoffs.

With bowl game names getting weirder and the matchups having less meaning as players not only prepare for the next level but are also looking to take their talents to other teams, one former college football star took some time out to blast the current state of bowl games.

During Florida State’s sad performance to Georgia that saw them down 42-7 at halftime, former Ohio State Buckeyes star and first-round NFL Draft pick Garrett Wilson took to his X account to say “Bowl games suck. Used to mean something.”

It is an opinion many college football fans have had in recent years, especially as the transfer portal has a greater impact on the sport immediately after the regular season ends. Hopefully, at least things should improve when it comes to the playoffs as they expand from four to 12 teams in 2024.
