Heading into the offseason, the Dallas Cowboys needed to add more running back depth even if they re-signed homegrown running back Rico Dowdle. However, the need to improve the position was intensified on Wednesday when it was revealed the player that rushed for 1,079 yards this past season is headed to the Carolina Panthers in free agency.
Dowdle’s departure likely means Dallas will use a premium pick on a running back in April’s NFL Draft. Maybe even Boise State star Ashton Jeanty. However, they still need an impact veteran to help carry the load or potentially start in 2025.
With that in mind, here are five running backs the Dallas Cowboys could soon target with the $42 million (via Over The Cap) in cap space they have.
JK Dobbins

When JK Dobbins is healthy, he is a pretty good starting RB. The problem is staying on the field for a full season has been a problem throughout his career. Nevertheless, he would still be a nice addition for Dallas to back up a rookie rusher. And probably could be had at a reasonable rate this offseason.
Miles Sanders

Two years ago Miles Sanders got the biggest deal of any running back in NFL free agency. However, his two seasons with Carolina were massive disappointments. He even lost his starting job midway through his first season with the Panthers. Still, he is a few years removed from being a Pro Bowler and star for the Eagles. At 27, he still may have some really good seasons left, and could be had at a bargain rate after two disastrous seasons.

Nick Chubb

At the end of the 2022 season Nick Chubb was viewed as one of the best running backs in the NFL. However, a horrific knee injury in 2023 has some wondering if the four-time Pro Bowler can return to his elite form. Dallas could feel another year removed from the injury could deliver positive results in 2025. Mattering on the price, he would be worth the risk. The 29-year-old could certainly have one or two more impact seasons left in him.
Raheem Mostert

Journeyman running back Raheem Mostert is a rock-solid NFL running back who earned Pro Bowl honors two seasons ago. If Dallas does take a running back early in the draft, the 10-year veteran would be a great mentor for him and a perfect part of a combo backfield next season.

Kareem Hunt

Another strong depth option for Dallas would be one-time Pro Bowler Kareem Hunt. Similar to Mostert, the eight-year NFL veteran could serve as a mentor to a rookie running back and is a very competent player who is a great backup but can be a starter a few times a year.
Dallas Cowboys RB Prediction

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones always likes big name additions. Nick Chubb would certainly be a strong option. But decision-makers may pass on him due to his injury history. That is why they will likely go hard for Miles Sanders. He is a well-known player but would also come at the lowest cost among the available former Pro Bowlers.
