Popular sports TV host floats wild New York Giants and San Francisco 49ers trade idea that includes free agent Aaron Rodgers

A popular sports television host had a bold idea for a blockbuster trade between the New York Giants and the San Francisco 49ers that would see free agent Aaron Rodgers return to his home state.

Both the 49ers and Giants were last-place teams in their respective divisions last season. It has put pressure on both front offices to make some changes this offseason to turn things around. After several winning seasons, San Francisco has gone with an addition-by-subtraction approach, including trade star receiving Deebo Samuel. New York has made several free-agent signings and has a top-three pick in next month’s NFL Draft.

Something else they have in common is they have a bit of a dilemma at the QB spot. The Giants need to find a signal caller to be their starter in 2025 and beyond. The 49ers have a Pro Bowl-level talent in Brock Purdy. But he is in line for a new contract after this season, and there has been speculation the organization is hesitant to give him the type of money he could be looking for.

That is probably why during a recent edition of Fox Sports show “Breakfast Ball,” host Craig Carton proposed a wild idea between the two teams.

Would the New York Giants give up three first-round picks for Brock Purdy?

During a segment discussing Aaron Rodgers’ future, Carton claimed the Giants are too much of a mess right now and would waste the final year of the future Hall of Famer’s career. He believes they should focus on long-term upgrades at QB instead of a short-term addition. With that in mind, he proposed New York trade three first-round picks to San Francisco for Brock Purdy.

Then to replace Purdy, the 49ers would turn around and sign Rodgers and bring the Bay Area native home in 2025. When one of his co-hosts questioned the idea of giving up three first-rounders and potentially $100 million in guaranteed money in a new contract for Purdy, he actually got support from another who claimed they didn’t hate the idea.

Mainly because the team seems to be in a competitive rebuild after moving on from some key veterans this season. Bringing in a Super Bowl winner with four MVP awards would send a message they are still serious about winning a title this season, but also looking to the future with three valuable first-round picks.

There has been speculation about Rodgers returning to the Bay Area for a couple of years. He would certainly be open to playing for a playoff-caliber team next year. The big question is would the Giants be willing to give up three first-rounders for Purdy? He is a very good QB. But many wonder if he is being elevated to Pro Bowl levels by his coaching staff and the players around him.
