A new report claims the buzz around the league is that the New York Giants are more likely to sign a veteran quarterback to compete with Daniel Jones instead of selecting a potential replacement early in the 2024 NFL Draft.
This will be an interesting next few months for the Giants. They have several needs to address in NFL free agency and April’s draft. Yet, they also have to decide what is their long-term plan for the quarterback position. After a breakout year in 2022, starting QB Daniel Jones seemed to regress a little in 2023 and the injury bug that has followed him his whole career showed up again.
This year’s draft class features five QBs with first or early second-round potential, and New York will have premium picks during those parts of the event. However, on Monday ESPN draft expert Matt Miller claimed signal caller will not be something the Giants address with one of those two picks in the first 39 selections.
“Rumors swirling at the Senior Bowl among agents is that the Giants are more likely to add a veteran free agent QB to compete with Daniel Jones than draft one early,” Miller wrote. He also expects the team to use the sixth pick overall on Washington star receiver Rome Odunze.
If they do go the route of a veteran quarterback in free agency, here are four possible options that could fit the New York Giants offseason budget.

4 veteran QBs New York Giants could sign to compete with Daniel Jones
Jacoby Brissett
While he has not been able to hold on to a starting job when given opportunities in the past, there is no better backup QB in the league than Jacoby Brissett. With Cleveland in 2022 he showed how good he can be with some good weapons to work with. If the Giants go the route of getting more offensive toys to play with and improving the offensive line, Brissett is the type of player who can lead a rock-solid offense in 2024.
Gardner Minshew
During stops in Philadelphia and Indianapolis the last two seasons, Gardner Minshew has been impressive at times. He was great for the Eagles in 2022 and nearly took the Colts to the playoffs this past season. At just 27, Minshew has the potential to steal the starting job away from Jones and the upside to be a legitimate, reliable starter in the league.
Marcus Mariota
The offensive system of head coach Brian Daboll and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka seems to work at its best with a QB that has running skills. That’s why former first-round pick Marcus Mariota would be a solid option in free agency. If he beats out Jones that is probably bad news, but maybe he changes his draft bust narrative in a system that better fits his skills.
Ryan Tannehill
Ryan Tannehill has many flaws, but when surrounded by strong talent he is a QB that can take a team to the playoffs. Signing Tannehill would very much be a stop-gap for a season or two but you can do far worse on this year’s QB free-agent market. Plus, after some down seasons, Tannehill would come at a team-friendly rate.
