Very rarely do we come across a talented athlete in more than one sport. Even more rarely do we come across an individual who could go professional in more than one sport.
Deion Sanders set the bar high when he played for both the National Football League and Major League Baseball.
Former Florida State quarterback and pitcher Jameis Winston was rumored to attempt the same thing.
We are all too familiar with Winston’s name and his performance on (and his unfortunate) off-the-field ways. However, since concentrating so much on his NFL Combine performance this week, many forgot about the fact that he has a fastball in the low-to-mid 90s and posted a 1.08 ERA with 31 strikeouts in 24 appearances.
And while there will never be another Prime Time, Winston had an impressive future in baseball.
NFL Network’s Steve Mariucci asked Winston if he was pitching anymore, at which point Winston told him no. Then Mariucci asked if he was a one-sport guy:
I’m a football player. I’m a quarterback.
While we are still not sure if baseball is Winston’s “back-up plan,” we can be confident that he won’t be trading in a pigskin for a baseball mound anytime soon.
Winston is slated to be a top pick in the upcoming 2015 NFL draft. His performance at the Scouting Combine over the past few days has solidified that status.
