Houston Astros reportedly taking offers on slugger Alex Bregman: 5 logical landing spots including the New York Mets

A new report claims that the Houston Astros actually trading homegrown star Alex Bregman is no longer just a possibility and the organization is already listening to offers as MLB nears the 2023 winter meetings.

Next week will bring this year’s edition of the MLB winter meetings. The yearly event is often a pivotal moment during the offseason where organizations speak with top-of-the-line free agents and often lay the groundwork for potential blockbuster trades with rival teams. One player whose name could be mentioned often in Nashville next week is Houston Astros star Alex Bregman.

Earlier this month, the rumblings began that the Astros signing the 29-year-old to a new long-term contract was far from a guarantee. The two-time All-Star is set to become a free agent after next season, but so is team legend Jose Altuve. And it seems the organization is reportedly more likely to invest a huge contract in the second basemen instead of the player who has manned the hot corner for them over the last eight years.

That is why speculation began this month that Houston might consider moving him now with a full year left on his contract. However, it seems things have moved from rumors to reality. On Monday, MLB Network league insider Jim Duquette claimed the team is starting to take trade offers from teams about Bregman.

SNY MLB insider Andy Martino also reported this week that he is hearing that the Astros are more open than ever to moving the third basemen.

With a trade looking very possible, let’s look at five teams that could pursue an Alex Bregman blockbuster at the MLB winter meetings.

5 teams that could pursue a trade for Houston Astros star Alex Bregman

New York Yankees

The New York Yankees are a team looking to make a splash to bolster their roster ahead of next season. With the lineup needing more thumps from third base after another down season from DJ Lemahieu, Bregman certainly fits the bill. Plus, with the team desperate to win another World Series title, the two-time All-Star certainly brings the championship pedigree their roster currently lacks.

Chicago Cubs

The Chicago Cubs are expected to make big moves this offseason. If they fail in their pursuit of Shohei Ohtani, Alex Bregman would be a solid consolation prize and a player they could ink to a long-term deal at a much lower rate. Furthermore, the Astros veteran would be a massive offensive upgrade at third base in 2024.

New York Mets

While the New York Mets would like Brett Baty to be their 3B of the future, he has not yet shown the signs he can be that. With a bunch of money coming off the books after next season, the Mets could certainly offer Bregman the money he is looking for, upgrade third, and do so at a decent cost in 2024.

Also, similar to the Yankees, he is the type of championship-level player the Mets need to help get the franchise their first championship since 1986.

Milwaukee Brewers

Not every team that could be in on Alex Bregman will be a wealthy organization. There may be some franchises willing to add him for one season if they feel he can be the missing piece to a championship puzzle. The Milwaukee Brewers could use an upgrade at third and may feel one season of the Houston star could be worth it as they pursue the franchise’s first championship.

  • Alex Bregman stats (2023): .262 AVG, .363 OBP, .441 SLG, 25 HR, 98 RBI, 103 R

San Francisco Giants

Like the Cubs, the San Francisco Giants are expected to be very active in the free agent and trade market this winter. Alex Bregman checks off a lot of boxes for the Giants and they have the money and desire to sign him to a long-term deal following a blockbuster trade.
