One of the most productive receivers of his generation could soon become the NFL’s highest-paid player at his position.
According to Jeff Schultz of The Athletic, Julio Jones is closing in on a contract extension with the Atlanta Falcons.
It was noted earlier in the offseason that the two were talking extension. We’re now at the point that a deal could be finalized at any moment.
Jones, 30, has tallied 1,400-plus total yards each of the past five seasons. The six-time Pro Bowler has led the NFL in receptions once and receiving yards twice throughout his eight-year career.
Any extension would likely reset the receiver market as we know it. Jones is looking at surpassing the $18 million Odell Beckham Jr. is earning annually with the Cleveland Browns.
Jones himself did recently skip the start of voluntary off-season workouts. This seems to be an indication that Atlanta wants to get something done sooner rather than later.
