Golden State Warriors All-Star Draymond Green sure looked like he wasn’t prepare to give up the basketball after the clock struck zero for the team’s record-setting 73rd win of the season.
But true to the team-first mantra that has defined the defending champs for the past couple years, it appears that every single member of the squad will be taking home a piece of that basketball as a keepsake:
“Now we’re going to cut it up and give everybody a piece of it,” Green said after the game, via The San Jose Mercury News. “It means that I’m a part of the best team ever, and not many people can say that. Fifteen guys can say that.”
Golden State blew Memphis out 125-104 in the team’s regular season finale in Oakland on Wednesday night. That set the single-season mark for wins, a mark previously held by the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls.
In terms of Green’s overall comments, he’s not 100 percent wrong here. At least from the perspective of their record, the 2015-16 Warriors are now the greatest regular season team in Association history.
Regular season team. That’s the key here.
Golden State must now come out of a top-heavy Western Conference in order to even have a shot at repeating as champions. If that does happen, we can start to talk about this team as one of the best ever.
Until then, the idea of sharing this historical game ball with every member of the team fits tightly into the Warriors own motto of “strength in numbers.”
