Nacho Gil’s eighth-minute goal gave New England a comfortable aggregate edge, and the Revolution beat Panama’s Club Atletico Independiente 3-0 on Thursday in Foxborough, Mass., to win a CONCACAF Champion Cup first-round series.
New England captured the two-leg, total-goal set 4-0 to advance to a round-of-16 matchup against Costa Rica’s Alajuelense. The first leg will be played Wednesday in Foxborough, with the conclusion set for March 14 in Alajuela, Costa Rica.
Tomas Chancalay expanded the Revolution’s lead in the 58th minute, and Mark-Anthony Kaye capped the blowout with a goal in the third minute of second-half stoppage time.
For the opening goal, three New England players completed a sharp passing sequence at the top of the box, with Carles Gil giving the ball to Nacho Gil for a right-footed shot from 14 yards.
A two-on-none counterattack led to the second goal, with Esmir Bajraktarevic setting up Chancalay to tap the ball into an open net.
Giacomo Vrioni’s pullback from the end line led to Kaye’s left-footed tap-in from 5 yards out.
