A new recruiting rumor suggests the Texas A&M football program is closing in on locking up an elite defender from the class of 2026.
Mike Elko got off to a solid start in his first year as the Aggies’ head coach. They upset top 10 teams like Missouri and LSU during the course of the regular season and nearly scored a stunning win over Texas in the final weeks of 2024. It resulted in an 8-5 finish and positive vibes heading into the offseason compared to a year ago.
However, if Elko hopes to hold on to the job, he needs to continue that momentum. And the best way to do that is gains in recruiting and acquiring impact talent in the transfer portal or from the high school ranks. They landed transfers from Georgia, Colorado, and Texas this offseason.
With the recent portal window closed, they have pivoted to focusing on stars from high school. And it seems they are closing in on one of the best players on defensive in the 2026 class.
Texas A&M football close to locking up Jireh Edwards
“Texas A&M has been named Jireh Edwards’ leader. And the Aggies have only solidified that top spot after his recent visit to College Station,” Rivals recruiting insider Adam Gorney reported this week. “What the five-star safety from Baltimore St. Frances loved the most was how coach Mike Elko was very involved and hands-on in the defensive meetings, and playing for him would be a huge draw.”
Edwards is a five-star safety recruit on many analyst boards. And viewed as a top 20 talent overall in the 2026 class. However, we are still close to a year away from college football signing day. And Gorney did add that Auburn, Oregon, Georgia, and Tennessee are working hard to get Edwards to change his mind before February.
