Hours after Jimbo Fisher led a convincing 51-10 win over Mississippi State, the Texas A&M Aggies head coach was relieved of his duties, with the university spending a record $77 million on his contract buyout.
Now the question points to who the Aggies plan on turning to next, with Fisher’s 45-25 record across six seasons deemed not quite good enough to keep the job. Fisher led the Aggies to bowl wins in each of his first three seasons, but Texas A&M hasn’t played in a bowl game since.
The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman has already outlined a list of names who could potentially replace Fisher in Texas A&M, and there are some big names mentioned.
Feldman even named current NFL head coach Dan Campbell as one option. His Detroit Lions are currently playoff-bound, but Feldman notes Campbell’s ties to the university as a former alum himself. Still, why would Campbell leave the NFL to take a demotion to college football, even if the Texas A&M gig is available? If Campbell can have sustained success in the NFL, that will top anything he could ever accomplish with his alma mater.
Campbell signed a six-year contract with the Lions in 2021, and by all accounts, he won’t be ready to leave any time soon, unless he’s pushed out. In other words, even though Campbell’s name has been brought up, Aggies fans shouldn’t waste a second of their time dreaming about landing the NFL coach for their program.
