Christian Yelich had to pull out of the Home Run Derby due to a sore back, but the Milwaukee Brewers star will participate in the All-Star Game itself.
On Monday, Yelich said he pulled out of the Home Run Derby due to the “volume of swings” it would take but is healthy enough for the All-Star Game.
Oakland Athletics third baseman Matt Chapman replaced Yelich in the Home Run Derby, which will take place Monday night.
Following the news of Yelich’s decision to abstain from the derby, he shared that he was “extremely disappointed” and that he was looking forward to hopefully getting another chance in the future to participate.
At the All-Star break, Yelich leads MLB with 31 home runs. He also has a .329 average and 67 RBI, along with a realistic chance of becoming the first N.L. Triple Crown winner in more than eight decades.
