Brad Calipari joins Kentucky coaching staff

Brad Calipari is joining his father’s staff at Kentucky as the first step in an attempt to break into coaching college basketball.

The younger Calipari, a former walk-on player at Kentucky, will serve as a graduate assistant coach, the school announced Thursday. He will be take part in all on-court activities with the Wildcats, including individual workouts and practices, as well as film sessions.

“I am extremely excited and honored to begin my coaching career at the University of Kentucky,” Brad Calipari began a series of tweets. “I would like to thank everyone who has supported me along the way, as I continue to chase my ultimate dream of one day becoming a head coach.”

Calipari, 24, played for Kentucky from 2016-18 and redshirted in 2018-19 before playing his final two seasons at Detroit Mercy. He appeared in 27 games at Kentucky and 33 at Detroit. In his junior season, he averaged 6.1 points in 20.1 minutes per game.

He earned a degree in communication at Kentucky in 2019, a master’s degree in liberal studies in Detroit this year and will be seeking a master’s in kinesiology while a grad assistant.
