Alex McGough threw for two touchdowns and ran for another to help the Birmingham Stallions get past the Houston Gamblers 38-15 on Sunday in Memphis, Tenn.
The Stallions (7-2) clung to a 17-15 lead through three quarters before breaking the game open with three touchdowns in the fourth. CJ Marable plunged in for a 2-yard touchdown, cornerback Matt Hankins returned a fumble by Houston quarterback Kenji Bahar 32 yards for a score and McGough dashed in for a 16-yard TD run.
McGough finished 13-for-21 passing for 208 yards and one interception. He ran for 34 yards on nine carries. Tight end Jace Sternberger and wideout Deon Cain caught McGough’s touchdown passes, as the Stallions were the first USFL team to reach seven wins.
The Gamblers (5-4) controlled possession for 38:21 but were held to five field goals. Kicker Nick Vogel went 5-for-5 with a long of 47 yards.
