After numerous reports indicating that the team was prepared to hire Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase as its new head coach, ESPN’s Adam Schefter is now reporting that the San Francisco 49ers plan to promote defensive line coach Jim Tomsula to that position.
Tomsula has been with the team for eight seasons and is well-liked around the locker room. He briefly served as the team’s interim head coach for Week 17 of the 2010 season after Mike Singletary was fired.
While Tomsula doesn’t even have experience as a coordinator in the NFL, he is respected around the league as a great defensive mind and someone who works well with his players.
Tomsula previously served as the head coach for the Reign Fire of the now defunct NFL Europe in 2006.
This move enables San Francisco to maintain its 3-4 defensive scheme and some continuity on that side of the ball. It’s also going to be well received within the locker room.
