One of the intended consequences of the current COVID-19 pandemic is the economic hits hundreds of millions of people around the world have taken.
Here in the United States, the unemployment rate has not looked this bad since all the way back in the 1930s. Even when the pandemic does fade at some point, the consumer is going to be impacted big time. In turn, those selling products and services are also going to be impacted.
There’s some good news on this front for sports fans who have already committed to season tickets. The NFL’s New York Giants, in a tremendous show of good faith, have decided to postpone season-ticket payments for the 2020 season until July.
Giants co-owners John Mara and Steve Tisch cited the “current landscape” of the situation in a memo to season-ticket holders announcing the postponement, via Art Stapleton of NorthJersey.com.
While the 2020 season is expected to start on time in September, it’s not yet known whether fans will even be in attendance. Though, things do seem to be trending in that direction.
It goes without saying that the NFL and its teams rely a great deal on season-ticket revenue. If fans are not going to be in attendance, it will lead to a revenue downtick unlike anything the league has seen before.
