NFL Draft still on as scheduled despite coronavirus outbreak

NFL compensatory picks

Likely out of an abundance of caution, North America’s four major professional sports leagues have united to take measures that could help prevent the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) to local communities around the United States.

It has led to speculation that the 2020 NFL Draft in Las Vegas could be postponed or altered in a big game to look nothing like what we have seen in the modern era.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, that’s no longer the case. The league has been in contact with necessary authorities to gauge the threat of an outbreak in the desert metropolis. As of right now, no changes are planned.

While this is seemingly good news, it’s important to note that things can change rapidly on this front. Specifically, a lot of Europe and some of Asia has shut down as it relates to sports matches. That’s no more true than in Italy, where the entire nation is on lockdown for the first time since World War II.

Here in the United States, there are 423 recorded cases of coronavirus and 19 deaths, according to the Center for Disease Control. Should those numbers increase, as expected, the draft in Vegas could be called into question.

For now, we’re not at that point.
