Yankees decline option on All-Star Edwin Encarnacion

The New York Yankees saw enough of veteran power hitter Edwin Encarnacion during the postseason.

The team has announced that it has declined the 2020 option on Encarnacion’s contract, deciding to pay him $5 million in a buyout.

Additionally, OF Aaron Hicks’s scheduled right UCL reconstruction surgery on Wednesday went as expected. The surgery was performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles.

Despite combining for 34 homers and 87 RBI between the Mariners and Yankees during the regular year, the three-time All-Star was a downright disaster in October.

Encarnacion hit .056 with 11 strikeouts in 18 at-bats against the Houston Astros in the ALCS. That’s just not going to cut it.

The move saves $15 million in payroll for the Yankees as they attempt to upgrade the starting rotation this winter.
