The Washington Redskins traded for Case Keenum and selected Dwayne Haskins No. 15 overall in the draft, but Colt McCoy could be the team’s starter in 2019.
At least, that’s what JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington reported on Thursday, noting the “door is still open” for McCoy to earn the starting job in training camp.
“If McCoy gets fully healthy in time for Richmond, which team sources believe will happen, he has a chance to finally take over this job.”
Currently, McCoy is still recovering from his third leg surgery following complications due to his initial surgery on a fractured fibula.
Yet when he is healthy, Washington coaches believe he’ll be right there in the thick of things in the quarterback competition: “When his time comes it will come quickly. He will be ready,” head coach Jay Gruden said, per Finlay.
It’s worth pointing out that, while McCoy does know the system, he has serious limitations from a physical standpoint. It’s also worth pointing out that Gruden very recently touted his rookie quarterback as deserving a chance to start.
Needless to say, he’s keeping his options open.
