Report: Mariners and Padres discussing blockbuster trade

The Seattle Mariners’ fire sale has already started. That included the team trading ace starter James Paxton to the New York Yankees in a blockbuster deal on Monday.

Seattle apparently isn’t done trading off veteran assets. According to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, the Mariners are discussing a deal that would send star shortstop Jean Segura and starting pitcher Mike Leake to the San Diego Padres for a package including outfielder Wil Myers.

Given that the parameters of the deal are already known, it seems the two sides might be far along in discussions.

An All-Star this past season, Segura hit .304 with 10 homers and 63 RBI in Seattle. Meanwhile, the 31-year-old Leake pitched to a 10-10 record with a 4.36 ERA and 1.30 WHIP.

Though, the headliner in this potential deal would have to be the 27-year-old Myers. Despite a down 2018 season, he’s more than proven to be a capable power bat. The former top prospect averaged 29 homers in 2016 and 2017.
