The Chicago Cubs and New York Mets were in a scoreless tie through six innings on Sunday. In the seventh, the Cubs got creative on a play that ultimately ended with Javier Baez stealing home.
With Baez at third and catcher Willson Contreras on first, Contreras drew a throw from New York pitcher Steven Matz. As soon as Matz threw to first, Baez took off hard for the plate, easily scoring.

The Cubs couldn’t have done it much better. Obviously, the situation allowed it to happen. That play doesn’t work if runners aren’t on the corners and if the pitcher is not left-handed. Even still, that play is far from easy to run.
It’s also gutsy. Chicago hadn’t broken through against Matz. But with a man on third and nobody out, the Cubs had three chances to score that run, two of those could have been without a hit.
Clearly, it worked like a charm. Not only was Baez was easily safe at the plate, but Contreras made it to second. He scored later in the inning on a sacrifice fly.
