Having not suited up in the majors this season, three-time All-Star infielder Brandon Phillips could very well make it to the Boston Red Sox’ big league club here soon.
The team announced on Wednesday that it has signed the soon-to-be 37-year-old veteran to a minor league contract.

An original draft pick of the then Montreal Expos back in 1999, Phillips split time between the Los Angeles Angels and Atlanta Braves last season. He hit a combined .285 with 11 homers and 60 RBI.
Phillips’ best season came back in 2007 with the Cincinnati Reds when he hit .288 with 30 homers and 94 RBI. His versatility could come in handy for a contending Red Sox team. After all, Phillips has played second base, shortstop and third base throughout his career.
Though, this certainly looks to be Boston’s way of upgrading at second withĀ Eduardo NĆŗƱez struggling to the tune of a .253 average with four homers and 18 RBI.
Former MVPĀ Dustin Pedroia has played in a grand total of three games due to a knee injury. This signing could also signal that Boston doesn’t think it will be getting him back any time soon.
