As the Cleveland Cavaliers continue to struggle, questions about the roster will remain in the forefront. And if the right trade becomes available, Tristan Thompson might be headed out.
According to Shams Charania of The Vertical, “multiple teams have cited” Thompson as a player Cleveland is willing to move.
One potential prize in that kind of deal, per Charania? DeAndre Jordan.
Thompson is three seasons into a five-year, $82 million contract, so that high-dollar salary would be integral in paying for an established star. Jordan, for example, is due $22.6 million this season and has a player option for 2018-19.
While the center isn’t being wasted away in Los Angeles, the team is only a fringe playoff contender. Jordan’s talent would improve Cleveland’s effectiveness near the rim, considering he’s averaging 11.8 points, 14.9 rebounds and 1.0 block this season.
Granted, the Clippers probably won’t part with Jordan unless they’re concerned he will opt out of his contract after the campaign and sign elsewhere in free agency.
But if a player like Jordan, Paul George or DeMarcus Cousins becomes available, expect Thompson to be the marquee player leaving the Cavs.
