Smith, the reigning Comeback Player of the Year, inspired many across the league with his incredible story. The veteran quarterback did the unthinkable in 2020, returning to the field and even becoming a starter just two years removed from a gruesome leg injury.

NFL rumors: Washington Football Team parting ways with Alex Smith

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Kimberly Jones reported Monday that Washington is expected to part ways with Smith in the coming days.

The decision doesn’t come as a surprise, given the organization’s desire to upgrade at quarterback. Not only is the team seeking to improve at the position, but moving on from Smith also makes the most financial sense. By releasing the veteran quarterback, Washington creates $14.7 million in cap space.

That will only add to the team’s luxurious cap room. While many teams will be limited from spending this offseason, due to the financial fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic, Washington is in a great position. It will be one of the few clubs capable of going after the top free-agent talent available this spring, with the cap flexibility to add multiple starters.

Ron Rivera and new general manager Martin Mayhew have already explored the trade market for quarterbacks. Both Sam Darnold and Marcus Mariota are on the organization’s radar, but no deal is imminent. Washington will likely exercise patience with its search, especially since the 2021 NFL Draft is approaching.

Smith has made it clear he intends to play in the 2021 NFL season. Turning 37 in May, however, the market for the veteran’s services will be limited. While he completed 66.7% of his passes in eight games last season, his 6.3 yards per attempt, 78.5 quarterback rating and 6/8 TD/INT ratio leave a lot to be desired.
