The San Francisco 49ers will be picking third overall in the 2021 NFL Draft after pulling off a blockbuster trade for the third pick. Right now, there’s no telling in what direction the 49ers are going to go. They have been linked to quarterbacks Mac Jones (Alabama), Trey Lance (North Dakota State) and Justin Fields (Ohio State).
Now, according to this report from NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, the 49ers’ decision is down to Jones and Lance with Fields apparently out of the mix.

It’s pretty much been nothing more than a betting game for those who cover the NFL. San Francisco has not leaked its selection after moving up to the third pick. With Trevor Lawrence and Zach Wilson slated to go one and two, respectively, the decision has always been down to these three.
The backdrop here is rather interesting in that the San Francisco 49ers quarterback decision will have an impact on Jimmy Garoppolo’s future with the team. If the pick is indeed Mac Jones, Garoppolo could very well be dealt during the 2021 NFL Draft later this week. He’s seen as the most pro-ready of the group. Meanwhile, Lance is a bit more of a project.
As it relates to Justin Fields, there’s no telling whether recent revelations that he’s dealing with epilepsy could be playing a role in the 49ers’ decision-making process.
