Philadelphia Eagles could make big move before 2021 NFL season

The Philadelphia Eagles have been one of the most active NFL teams this offseason, bringing in a new coaching staff, trading Carson Wentz and making two big deals in the 2021 NFL Draft. While most front offices are happy with their rosters, the Eagles might have another big move planned.

Philadelphia seemed headed for a rebuild, based on the moves it made this spring. If Wentz meets certain incentives with the Indianapolis Colts, the Eagles will receive their 2022 first-round pick. Paired with the blockbuster deal made with the Miami Dolphins, general manager Howie Roseman will likely have three top-30 picks at his disposal in the 2022 NFL Draft.

With all the draft capital and a few trade chips still on the roster, Philadelphia is in a position of strength. It can either use the future picks to make a blockbuster trade or, based on the transactions this offseason, trade a player like Zach Ertz to create more opportunities for younger players.

As the NFL rumors have started to slow down for a majority of the league, the Eagles could be a team to watch for another big move before the regular season kicks off.

Will the Philadelphia Eagles pull off a Deshaun Watson trade

When Houston Texans star Deshaun Watson first requested a trade, the organization wouldn’t even consider it. Eight teams tried to land the Pro Bowl quarterback, but every inquiry was met with instant rejection from Texans’ general manager Nick Caserio.

Everything changed after sexual harassment and assault allegations emerged against Watson. He is currently being investigated by the NFL after more than 20 women accused him of sexual misconduct. As the league investigates the matter, Watson and his lawyer are fighting a joint civil suit.

A settlement isn’t expected to happen, with both speaking out regarding their desire for a trial so the full story can be told. With Watson facing an uncertain short-term future in the NFL, the Texans are now willing to trade him and there are interested clubs.

If not for the allegations, Philadelphia might not have had a shot to acquire Watson. Both the San Francisco 49ers and Miami Dolphins likely would have made an all-out push for the MVP-caliber passer. Instead, San Francisco traded three first-round picks to move up to No. 3 for Trey Lance and the Dolphins sent their 2022 first-round pick to move up to No. 6 overall.

The Eagles remain interested in Watson and could be the favorite to land him. Potentially holding three 2022 first-round picks, a young quarterback (Jalen Hurts) and additional assets, Philadelphia has the pieces to land a superstar.

If Watson’s case is settled by the summer and the NFL’s investigation is wrapped up, he could see the field in 2021. If that’s the case, Roseman likely won’t hesitate to pull the trigger on a trade if the opportunity presents itself.
