The New York Giants reportedly “sold” Drew Lock that by coming to Gotham he will get every opportunity to win the starting job in 2024.
The situation with the starting QB spot has been one of the biggest talking points for Big Blue fans all off-season. After a breakout year in 2022 that landed him a huge extension, Daniel Jones seemingly regressed before an ACL tear ended his season after six starts.
With the team having the sixth pick in April’s NFL Draft, there has been speculation they could trade up or hope a prospect they love falls to them at six to replace Jones. They also had discussions with Seattle Seahawks great Russell Wilson about joining the team to supplant the incumbent QB this month as well.
However, Wilson took his talents to Pittsburgh in free agency and it seems unlikely the New York Giants will get the player they really want in the 2024 NFL Draft. The team did make a surprise trade on Wednesday for veteran backup Drew Lock. Most assume he would serve as the replacement for Tyrod Taylor as the QB2, however, it looks like he is under the impression he will have a chance to win the starting job in training camp.
- Drew Lock stats (Career): 9-14 record, 5, 283 passing yards, 28 TDs, 23 INTs, 79.5 rating
- Drew Lock contract: 1 year, $5 million
On Thursday, Seattle Seahawks general manager John Schneider claimed in an interview that during discussions on a trade, Lock was “sold” on the opportunity to win the QB1 spot this summer. “He looked at Baker Mayfield’s opportunity last year [in Tampa Bay] and felt it could be something similar”
Lock was a second-round pick by the Denver Broncos in the 2019 NFL Draft. He started in 18 games for the team over two seasons and posted an 8-10 record before being traded to Seattle in the blockbuster Russell Wilson trade.
