A new report claims that the New York Giants’ recent interest in future Hall-of-Famer Russell Wilson may have been spurred on by a belief that Daniel Jones might not be ready to go when the 2024 season begins in September.

This has been an eventful offseason so far for the Giants. It started with a report of dissent in the coaching staff and issues with head coach Brian Daboll. Star Saquon Barkley and Xavier McKinney left in the first days of free agency but the team has made some moves — like trading for Brian Burns — that should make them better in 2024.

However, despite all that news the situation at quarterback has been one of the biggest talking points for fans in the offseason. After a breakout season in 2022, Daniel Jones took a major step back in 2023 as he seemed to regress before a torn ACL ended his season after six starts. It is why the team has been linked to taking a top QB prospect in April’s NFL Draft.

It is also why the organization spoke with Russell Wilson about joining the team before he eventually decided to take his talents to Pittsburgh in NFL free agency. Well, it seems like the front office’s interest in the veteran was motivated by some concerns about the health of Jones.

On a recent edition of the “GM Shuffle Podcast,” former NFL GM Michael Lombardi revealed some worrisome information about the planned starting QB for 2024. “The Giants I think were interested [in Wilson] because I’m not sure Daniel Jones is 100% healthy. It’s kind of behind schedule on that.”

This is the first report on Jones possibly not being ready for Week 1 early in September. While the New York Giants did not get Wilson, they did swing a trade this week for former Broncos and Seahawks veteran Drew Lock.
