MLB insider reveals 4 potential suitors for New York Mets’ Pete Alonso trade, including Cubs

The New York Mets made plenty of MLB news this past offseason by signaling that Pete Alonso wouldn’t receive a contract extension. With the club now struggling and poised to be sellers at the trade deadline, there are already MLB rumors swirling about where Alonso could land.

New York floated its All-Star first baseman ahead of the 2023 MLB trade deadline but opted to keep him and just move out Justin Verlander, Max Scherzer and Tommy Pham. Nearly one year later, with the club not close to contention, it appears a deal for Alonso could finally come.

From New York’s perspective, there’s potentially more value in moving him this summer for a prospect rather than extending him a qualifying offer and only getting a fourth-round pick back if he departs in MLB free agency. As a result, the slugger’s name has popped up in MLB trade rumors.

According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Chicago Cubs are viewed as the “obvious potential suitor” for Alonso this summer. Notably, the Cubs have been interested in the Mets’ star slugger for some time.

Chicago isn’t the only team being floated as a potential trade partner with New York. An MLB executive who spoke to Heyman suggested the Seattle Mariners, Toronto Blue Jays and Seattle Mariners could also be viable trade landing spots for Alonso.

While it’s unclear if Houston or Toronto will be buyers at the MLB trade deadline, Seattle sits atop the AL West entering MLB games today. While Alonso isn’t playing at an All-Star level right now, he would add more production for a Mariners lineup that entered June ranked 28th in runs scored and batting average (.221).
