Former Boston Celtics coach Ime Udoka has emerged as a candidate for multiple in-season coaching vacancies and while he didn’t land either job, there is reportedly a possibility he lands one this summer.
Boston hired Udoka as an assistant coach in October 2020, having him serving alongside Brad Stevens. When Stevens moved into the front office, Udoka was promoted to head coach in June 2021. The Celtics reached the NBA Finals for the first time since 2008, but Udoka’s tenure in Boston ended months later.

In September 2022, Udoka was suspended for the entire 2022-’23 season for violating team policies tied to an improper relationship with a female staffer. Furthermore, the organization’s investigation found that Udokla made unwanted and inappropriate comments toward her.

With Udoka unwilling to resign, Boston named Joe Mazzulla as its interim coach. With the Celtics sitting near the top of the NBA standings, Mazzilla received a new contract and Boston officially parted ways with Udoka.
According to Heavy.com’s Steve Bulpett, multiple teams have reportedly already started the vetting process for Udoka despite still having current head coaches.
“Some NBA teams are now getting into the vetting process on the chance they might have an opening. People from three organizations have called here to discuss Udoka, with one looking for his phone number ‘in case we decide to do something. We just want to be ready.'”

The Brooklyn Nets and Atlanta Hawks both expressed interest in Udoka after they fired their head coaches during the season. While they each ultimately went in different directions, it demonstrates two instances of organizations open to hiring Udoka following his suspension.
The 42-year-old was one of the best assistant coaches in the NBA before landing in Boston, with his time working under Gregg Popovich strengthening his resume. Considering the interest he has already received and the likelihood of more NBA coaching vacancies this summer, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Udoka is coaching next season.
