Top NFL free agents of 2024: Ranking the top 400 overall and by position
2024-03-14
Most of the top 2024 NFL free agents are off the open market. Others are still available heading into draft season.
What we do know is that it was a player-friendly market with multiple teams boasting a ton of room under the 2024 NFL salary cap.
Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones cashed in after winning back-to-back titles? Pro Bowl quarterback Kirk Cousins laded with the Atlanta Falcons.
Here, we take a look at the top-400 NFL free agents of 2024 with a positional breakdown a bit further below.
1. Chris Jones, defensive tackle, Kansas City Chiefs (Re-signed with the Chiefs)
Jones has been an absolute force for the Chiefs since they made him a second-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. He was a finalist for the NFL Defensive Player of the Year award in 2022 before tallying 29 QB hits and 10.5 sacks this past season. Jones and his Chiefs have had their contractual issues, leading many to believe he’ll end up joining another team during NFL free agency. The question here is whether Kansas City will once again place the franchise tag on him after he helped them to another Super Bowl title.
2. Kirk Cousins, quarterback, Minnesota Vikings (Signed with the Falcons)
For a while this past season, it seemed as if Cousins was playing out the string for the Minnesota Vikings. Once he went down with an Achilles’ injury eight games in, that was magnified further. Now, we’re not so sure. As one of the top NFL free agents of 2024, Cousins will certainly draw interest. Minnesota can’t franchise him. But we envision a scenario in which he returns. In his six seasons with the Vikings, Cousins is averaging 3,900 passing yards with 29 touchdowns and nine interceptions. That’s not too bad at all.
3. Danielle Hunter, EDGE, Minnesota Vikings (Signed with the Texans)
Hunter just continues to turn in awesome season after awesome season. This past regular season saw the 29-year-old edge guy record a league-high 23 tackles for loss to go with 16.5 sacks and four forced fumbles. There were rumblings leading up to the in-season NFL trade deadline that he could be moved. We’re not expecting a return to Minnesota. Instead, Hunter will be one of the top NFL free agents to actually hit the market.
The Broncos’ decision to release Simmons didn’t come as too much of a surprise given his cap hit of north of $18 million for next season. He was a casualty of Russell Wilson’s contract. Simmons, 30, now becomes one of the top NFL free agents after earning four All-Pro appearances over the past five seasons. In 2023, he recorded three interceptions while giving up an 89.1 QB rating.
5. Saquon Barkley, running back, New York Giants (Signed with the Eagles)
Barkley, 26, was expected to be one of the top NFL free agents last offseason before New York placed the franchise tag on him. A lengthy stalemate led to the two sides coming to terms on a one-year deal. Heading into this year’s free agency, it seems unlikely that he’ll be tagged again. The former top-two pick recorded north of 1,200 total yards with 10 touchdowns last season. However, he also averaged less than four yards per rush. With his injury history and work usage, buyer should definitely beware.
6. Christian Wilkins, defensive tackle, Miami Dolphins (Signed with the Raiders)
A first-round pick of the Dolphins back in 2019 out of Clemson, Wilkins could not have picked a better time to put up a career-best season. He recorded 23 QB hits, 10 tackles for loss and nine sacks. He’s solid stopping the run and has morphed into a potentially elite pass-rushing interior lineman. Wilkins will now hit free agency with Miami opting against placing the franchise tag on him.
7. Mike Evans, wide receiver, Tampa Bay Buccaneers (re-signed with Buccaneers, 2 years- $52 million
Early in the 2023 season, it seemed to be a foregone conclusion that Evans would leave. He’s slated to be among the top-10 NFL free agents and has proven himself as a consistent threat. That includes a record 10 consecutive 1,000-yard seasons to open his career. This past regular season saw Evans put up 79 receptions, 1,255 yards with a league-leading 13 touchdowns. Whether with the Buccaneers or another team, Evans age of 30 years old will likely lead to a shorter-term contract.
8. Baker Mayfield, quarterback, Tampa Bay Buccaneers (Re-signed with the Buccaneers)
Talk about having a rebound season and proving yourself capable as a QB1. In leading the Buccaneers to a surprise NFC South title, Baker Mayfield completed 64% of his passes for 4,044 yards with 28 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. It will more than likely lead to him re-signing with the Buccaneers on a lucrative long-term contract.
9. Xavier McKinney, safety, New York Giants (Signed with the Green Bay Packers)
Yet another candidate for the franchise tag, McKinney has been nothing short of great in his first four seasons. This past year saw the former Alabama star record 11 passes defended and three interceptions. Opposing quarterbacks posted a mere 69.8 passer rating when targeting him. He’s a jack-of-all-trades, meaning that the safety can also play slot corner in a pinch. If he hits the open market, expect widespread interest.
10. Calvin Ridley, wide receiver, Jacksonville Jaguars (Signed with the Tennessee Titans)
After missing the entire 2022 campaign due to a suspension for gambling, Ridley was back up to his old tricks for the Jaguars this past season. Still only 29, it’s going to lead to some big-time interest in NFL free agency. After all, he hauled in 76 passes for 1,016 yards and eight touchdowns. Ridley is a borderline WR1, and should get paid like it.
Top 2024 NFL free agents: Underrated young stars and veterans
11. Josh Jacobs, running back, Las Vegas Raiders (Signed with the Packers)
The rushing champion in 2022, Jacobs had a down 2023 campaign. He averaged just 3.5 yards per attempt and put up 805 rushing yards. That came after tallying an absurd 1,653 yards the year prior. A lot of this had to do with Jacobs holding out during the summer for a new contract. He’s still one of the top NFL free agents of 2024. Just don’t expect a huge long-term contract in today’s running back climate around the league.
12. Tyron Smith, offensive tackle, Dallas Cowboys (Signed with the Jets)
It certainly would be odd to see this eight-time Pro Bowler and future Hall of Famer play with another team outside of the Cowboys. Smith has been starring in Big D for the past 13 seasons. Sure, he’ not the player he was in his prime. But Smith put up a rebound performance in 2023 after three consecutive injured-plagued campaigns. That included earning Second-Team All-Pro honors. We’re intrigued to see what happens here.
13. Chase Young, EDGE, San Francisco 49ers (Signed with the Saints)
Acquired from the Washington Commanders during the in-season NFL trade deadline, Young finished the regular season with 15 QB hits, 7.5 sacks and seven tackles for loss. It represented a career-best performance for the former No. 2 pick. The question here is whether the 49ers or another team is going to pay for upside rather than previous production. At 24, we’re banking on it.
14. Xavien Howard, cornerback, Miami Dolphins
Miami’s decision to release Howard shouldn’t be too surprising given his injury-plagued 2023 season and cap figure heading into 2024. In no way does this mean he’s not going to draw a ton of interest on the NFL free agent market. It was just back in 2021 that Howard yielded a mere 52.7% completion and 72.6 QB rating when targeted. Some team is going to hold out hope that he returns to form.
At 30-year-old, it’s highly unlikely that Derrick Henry will get much more than a one or two-year contract in NFL free agency. The wear and tear on his body adds another layer to this. What we do know is that contending teams will show interest in a dude who still went for nearly 1,400 total yards and 12 touchdowns with the Titans last season. He’s also highly unlikely to be back with Tennessee in 2024.
16. Patrick Queen, linebacker, Baltimore Ravens (Signed with Pittsburgh Steelers)
Queen, 24, hits NFL free agency at just the right time. Still only 24 years old, he’s coming off his first ever All-Pro eason. The former LSU star recorded 133 tackles, 3.5 sacks and an interception while giving up less than 400 receiving yards on 67 targets. The market is going to be robust here.
17. Devin White, linebacker, Tampa Bay Buccaneers (Signed with the Philadelphia Eagles)
The NFL free agent class at linebacker is top-heavy, meaning that White should be able to cash in if he opts to leave Tampa Bay. A first-round pick of the Bucs back in 2019, White earned All-Pro honors as a sophomore and made the Pro Bowl team the following season. This past season saw him intercept two passes while yielding a 65.5 QB rating in coverage.
18. Michael Onwenu, offensive line, New England Patriots (Re-signed with the Patriots)
As one of the top NFL free agents on the offensive line, Onwenu is going to be paid big time. He can play both tackle and guard, which is certainly to his advantage. According to Pro Football Focus, he graded out his best at left guard (85.2). That’s elite-level stuff right there.
Williams, 26, has started all 59 games in which he’s appeared in four seasons with the Bengals after they made him a top-11 pick in 2020. Pass protection has been somewhat of an issue. But he’s seen as a mauler. The question here is whether teams will view Williams as a left tackle or a right tackle on the open market.
20. Tre’Davious White, cornerback, Buffalo Bills (Signed with the Los Angeles Rams)
White earned All-Pro honors with the Buffalo Bills back in 2019, recording six interceptions in the process. White also earned Pro Bowl honors the following season. Since then, injuries have caught up to the former first-round pick from LSU. White tore his ACL back in 2021. After missing the start of the 2022 season due to that same injury, White tore his Achilles this past season. It cost him all but four games.
