As the Green Bay Packers prepare for training camp, Aaron Rodgers trade rumors have largely slowed to a halt as the two sides refuse to budge from their positions. At a critical time in the NFL offseason, the latest update doesn’t bode well for the reigning NFL MVP.

Rodgers, who could save more than $18 million but exercise his 2021 opt-out clause Friday, wants to play elsewhere. Frustrated by the organization’s reluctance to sign him to a long-term deal and displeased with the franchise culture, the 37-year-old no longer wants to play for the Packers’ current regime.

But for as determined as he might be, Green Bay’s front office also isn’t budging. Both publicly and privately, general manager Brian Gutekunst is making it clear he won’t entertain a trade. With multiple teams set at quarterback and others fully aware of Green Bay’s stance, it seems the trade market for Rodgers has evaporated.

“I’ve also checked in with multiple teams around the league who are monitoring the Aaron Rodgers trade situation. They said there is no trade market for Rodgers right now.”

It’s an unfortunate development for Rodgers. who wants to compete for a Super Bowl with another organization. While he still has the option of opting out, that is extremely unlikely. So, assuming he skips the beginning of training camp, he must then decide whether or not to forego $30-plus million by going a year without playing football.

The Packers haven’t stopped talking to Rodgers entirely. Despite CEO Mark Murphy best efforts to make things worse, the franchise had preliminary contract discussions with the franchise quarterback. So, it’s still possiblel the two sides agree to a resolution.

At the very least, the three-time NFL MVP isn’t expected to report for the start of training camp in a few weeks. In his absence, Jordan Love will have an opportunity to receive all the first-team reps so he can prove he is ready to be a starting quarterback in the NFL.

But a resolution between Rodgers and the Packers still might be the likeliest outcome. Green Bay offers him the best opportunity to compete for a second Lombardi Trophy and he likes the coaching staff and his teammates. All things considered, it would be a surprise if Aaron Rodgers doesn’t take the field Week 1 against the New Orleans Saints.
