It’s a theme that has been all too familiar for New York Giants fans over the last several seasons, their team was once again thoroughly outclassed by an opponent.
This time, the culprit was the Los Angeles Chargers who defeated Big Blue 37-21 Sunday at Sofi Stadium.
The final score isn’t indicative of how badly the Giants played on Sunday as at one point they were trailing 37-7. New York would score two touchdowns in the final five minutes of the game when the Chargers had already taken their foot off the gas.
The offense once again struggled as Mike Glennon was making his second start in place of the injured Daniel Jones. Glennon finished the game completing 17-of-36 passes for 191 yards and threw two touchdowns and had one interception. He also scored the final points of the game on a seven-yard run, but he was ineffective until it was garbage time.
What was most disheartening about the loss, was that the Giants defense which had been outstanding for the last month, was overmatched by the Chargers offense. At one point in the first half, the Chargers offense scored 17 points on three possessions.
Los Angeles quarterback Justin Herbert had one of his best games of the season, completing 23-of-31 passes for 275 yards and three touchdowns.
Herbert would make the play of the game with just 17 seconds remaining in the first half when he connected with Jalen Guyton on a 59-yard touchdown to give Los Angeles a 24-7 halftime lead. Somehow Guyton got past Logan Ryan and the rest of the secondary which is inexcusable considering there were only seconds remaining.
New York Giants humiliated again
There was nothing positive that you could take away from the Giants performance on Sunday. They were outgained 423 to 316 and seldom pressured Herbert.
New York was hoping Saquon Barkley could have a breakout game going against the 31st ranked run defense, but he managed just 64 yards on 16 carries.
With the loss, the Giants have now clinched their fifth consecutive losing season, and it’s clear major changes are needed throughout the organization.
Next up for Big Blue is a meeting next Sunday with the division-leading (9-4) Dallas Cowboys. Despite the game being played at MetLife Stadium, expect two-thirds of the stadium to be filled with Cowboys fans.
