The Las Vegas Raiders’ quarterback situation is pretty much set for the 2023 season after they inked former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to a three-year contract on Monday.
Garoppolo will replace longtime starter Derek Carr under center in Sin City after Las Vegas opted to move on from him.
Whether this is seen as an upgrade, or a lateral move remains to be seen. It will be a topic of discussion in Southern Nevada and throughout the rest of the NFL.
Unfortunately for the Raiders, trouble could very well be brewing internally. Star wide receiver Davante Adams took to Instagram hours after the Garoppolo signing was reported. He didn’t seem to be too happy about the move.
“If we haven’t talked in the last 3 weeks, don’t hit me up about this s**t. Thanks,” Adams wrote.
There is certainly a major backdrop to this. Carr recruited Adams from the Green Bay Packers to Las Vegas last offseason. The two had played college ball together at Fresno State are seen as really good friends off the field. Obviously, Adams’ personal attachment to Carr could play a role in his unhappiness.
Much more recently, Adams had been recruiting another former teammate in that of Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers to the Las Vegas Raiders. Right now, it appears that the four-time NFL MVP is either retiring or heading to the New York Jets in a blockbuster trade. Vegas had previously pulled out of the bidding before signing Garoppolo.
Of course, this could all be a coincidence on Adams’ part. Perhaps, he was talking about something completely unrelated to football. But the timing was suspicious.

It also must be noted that Adams was a vocal critic of his team’s performance in the star wide receiver’s first season with the Las Vegas Raiders. That included calling out questionable decision making from head coach Josh McDaniels.
After the Raiders’ disastrous 2022 season under McDaniels, Adams committed to the team moving forward. However, he did provide a bit of a caveat. In short, the All-Pro wide receiver wanted some input on the Raiders’ quarterback situation. Whether he was able to talk with the brass in Southern Nevada ahead of the Garoppolo signing remains to be seen.
