Things could very well spiral out of control between Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson and his organization, potentially leading to a trade within the not-so-distant future.
At the very least, that’s what is being reported following a very public ongoing rift between the Super Bowl signal caller and his Seahawks. Primarily, Wilson is not happy about how much power head coach Pete Carroll has. The future Hall of Famer wants some control over player personnel and the roster. Seattle is unwilling to do that.
Further east, the Dallas Cowboys have been in contract negotiations with quarterback Dak Prescott for the better part of the past 18 months. After suffering a devastating ankle injury back in Week 5 of the 2020 NFL season, contract talks have not been going too well as Dallas faces a deadline to place the dreaded franchise tag on its quarterback.
This has led to some speculation that a Russell Wilson trade for Dak Prescott could be in the cards. That’s magnified by the fact that Dallas is listed as one of the teams Wilson would grant a trade to. Does this mean something could be up? Not so fast.

Idea of a Dak Prescott for Russell Wilson trade is ‘laughable’
NFL Media’s Jane Slater used that term recently when describing a reaction from a well-placed Cowboys source regarding a potential Prescott-for-Wilson trade.
To be clear, a lot of moving parts would have to come into focus in order for this to work. First off, Prescott would have to agree to a contract extension with the Seahawks beforehand.

It’s similar to what we saw between wide receiver Jarvis Landry and the Cleveland Browns ahead of his trade from the Miami Dolphins a couple years back. Miami had placed the franchise tag on Landry with the sole intention of trading him. We’re also hearing other teams are interested in doing the same thing this coming March.
In no way does this mean NFL rumors linking the Cowboys and Seahawks to a blockbuster trade make sense. In addition to the Dak Prescott contract situation, Dallas would have to yield more assets to Seattle in order to pull off a Russell Wilson trade. That would likely include the 10th pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.
As it relates to Wilson, Dallas joins the likes of the Saints, Raiders and Bears as teams the future first-ballot Hall of Famer would accept a trade to. Remember, he has a full no-trade clause embedded within his current four-year, $140 million contract. While Wilson has yet to request a trade, his agent, Mark Rodgers, made it clear that the quarterback would be open to being moved.
While highly unlikely, a trade could come to fruition soon if things continue to spiral out of control between Russell Wilson and his organization.

Prescott is in a similar situation in that the quarterback has not seen much progress in contract talks with the Cowboys. Prescott is slated to earn $37.7 million in 2021 should Dallas place the franchise tag on the signal caller. The team could also use said tag as a way to trade Prescott with the expectation of finding someone else on the trade market. Again, that seems highly unlikely.
For now, we can throw cold water on the idea of a Russell Wilson trade for Dak Prescott.
