Rumors leading up to the decision from first-year head coach Ron Rivera indicated that this might end up being the case. With that said, Haskins is now currently No. 3 on the Washington depth chart. With Kyle Allen starting on Sunday, Alex Smith backed him up. Haskins himself was inactive. From starting quarterback to inactive in the matter of days. It really is a crazy situation in D.C. After sponsors threatened to back out and minority owners put pressure on him, Washington Football Team owner Daniel Snyder finally decided to change his franchise’s name ahead of the 2020 NFL season.
With it being so close to the start of the season, it stood to reason that the franchise didn’t have enough time to come up with a new name after retiring its previous iteration following 87 years of existence.
We now have some more information on the Washington Football Team name, and it’s rather surprising.
Washington Football Team name could remain unchanged for 2021 NFL season
“There’s a pretty good chance we will be the Washington Football Team next season,” team president Jason Wright told Washington TV station WJLA on Tuesday.
We’ve heard some Washington players speak up about a potential full-time team name. That includes the Washington Red Tails as a way to pay homage to African-American war heroes and move on from the divisive team name of the past.
However, Washington has a lot more pressing concerns right now.
Washington Football Team now facing more accusations
The Washington Post released a long investigative story during the summer detailing a toxic culture of sexual harassment within the organization dating back years. Owner Daniel Snyder and Co. ultimately ended up implicated.
Then, late last week, the same news outlet expanded on the report. It’s pretty alarming stuff and includes alleged lewd comments from Mr. Snyder himself.
We’re not even sure if Snyder is going to be the long-term owner of the Washington Football Team. Over the course of the past several months, things have spiraled out of control relating to the embattled organization head.
- Reports of sexual harassment from the top down in Washington
- Minority owners calling for Daniel Snyder to sell the Washington Football Team
- Washington Football team being forced to change its name
- A 1-5 record on the field through the first six weeks of the 2020 NFL season
Yeah, it seems like the Washington Football Team changing its name is the least of it concerns right now.
