Heading into a new season with a brand new ownership group, the vibes surrounding the Washington Commanders are all positive right now. Training camp is set to begin on the 27th and there’s renewed optimism about how first-year offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy can help second-year QB Sam Howell settle in as the starter.
Yet, roster moves are constantly being made around the NFL, and that’s no different for the Commanders.
On Monday, the team made offensive guard Andrew Norwell’s release official, a move that was previously expected. Even though he started 16 games for the team last season, Norwell had been placed on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list in late May with an elbow injury.
Now the team has officially removed the 31-year-old former All-Pro from the roster altogether. It’s unknown how long Norwell’s elbow injury will sideline the interior lineman or if he plans to continue playing.
Norwell has started 127 games in his nine-year career, having suited up for the Panthers, Jaguars, and Commanders in his career thus far. The front office made a few free agency signings this offseason in an attempt to bolster their line up front.
These additions include projected starting center Nick Gates and right tackle Andrew Wylie. Where Norwell goes from here is anyone’s guess, but it won’t be back with the Commanders.
